Real World Economics: The cost of war? Well, let me tell you

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:56:48 GMT

Edward LottermanRobert E. Lee supposedly once remarked, although he may have been quoting someone else, that “It is well that war is so terrible – otherwise we should grow too fond of it.”And therein lies a terrible paradox. Everyone knows that wars can be terrible in their carnage. They generally are huge wastes of economic resources.Yet nations, including ours, still take actions likely to lead to war. It seems that we are, indeed, “fond of it.” But why? What benefits exist that motivate nations to wage war? Can they possibly outweigh the costs, human and otherwise? Some 18 months of news from Ukraine plus discussion of China’s threats to seize Taiwan have merged in my mind with seasonal ruminations about my own experience in Vietnam 53 year ago. The result is rueful musing about human cultures and innate human nature. Will rational thought or action ever change anything?Let me st...

Governor Hochul and City Mayor Eric Adams have called for a federal response to expand work authorizations for asylum seekers. Freeman-Tolbert speculates on why this action has yet to be taken."The fear of the federal government, I believe, is that more people are gonna come because 'oh, we can go to the U.S. and get work authorization and start working,' and you don't want to encourage that. You want to encourage only individuals that are fearing for their life to come to the U.S., so they have to balance t...

Argentina not ready to over-react after alarming loss to England in Rugby World Cup opener

LA BAULE-ESCOUBLAC, France (AP) — Argentina will not over-react despite producing a hugely underwhelming display in its loss to 14-man England in their Rugby World Cup opener, Pumas forwards coach Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe said on Sunday.England played with 14 men from the third minute in Marseille follow Tom Curry’s red card but still inflicted a 27-10 defeat on Argentina, which was its own worst enemy in conceding 13 penalties and amassing 15 turnovers. The result has already put Argentina on the back foot in a pool that also includes Japan and Samoa as teams who could realistically advance.Yet Fernandez Lobbe, the team’s former star flanker, was taking a measured view.“It would not be good for the leadership to change things,” he said. “It was a hard blow and it must be taken on the chin.”Before the tournament, Argentina was many people’s favorites to win Pool D, given England’s poor recent form and the Pumas having beaten Australia away in July and had two close games aga...
